SFX Entertainment Is a Sleeper for 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- SFX Entertainment (SFXE) is the emerging leader of a trend called "electronic dance music" or "electronic dance culture."

If you don't know what EDM is, you're probably over 30. But ask anyone between 16 to 30 about EDM and you'll hear an earful. There's a reason why this is the hottest and fastest growing niche of music today.

The kids, as they say, love it.

DJs like David Guetta, Calvin Harris, deadmau5, Tiesto, Hardwell and Afrojack have emerged in recent years to become major headliners. Dance music has been popular in Europe for more than 20 years. Remember raves and the dance culture portrayed in the '90s hit film Trainspotting? Large-scale dance festivals have also been huge moneymakers for years in Europe.

Those same trends have finally landed in a big way in North America in the past five years. Las Vegas, Miami and Toronto are now major EDM cities. Festivals have exploded in the past three years. Millennials can't get enough of this music, it seems. So, in the middle of all this, you have Bob Sillerman. He is the guy who assembled Live Nation. He's the guy who bought Graceland and 19 Entertainment which owned American Idol. He's produced mega-Broadway hits. In short, he's an impresario who is very good at having his finger on the pulse of what's hot and also making a lot of money from it. Now, he's at it again with SFX.

The SFX IPO last month was a bit of a bust. Shares were priced at $13 but immediately started to drop. They bottomed out last week at around $7.

It didn't garner the same attention as the big recent tech IPOs. It's not well covered -- only three analysts have coverage of the name. It has zero attention from retail investors.

Put all this together with a story that likely doesn't seem to connect with most Wall Streeters, who have likely never heard of Avicii, and it's easy to understand why SFX's story didn't immediately grab people. However, there's a great story here, which likely will be reflected in future earnings reports:
Millenials are crazy for EDM. EDM's long history in Europe suggest this musical niche is not a flash in the pan. Jay-Z recently said he thinks it's a style that's here to stay. Although companies like Live Nation, which Sillerman built, exist to provide full vertical integration of the concert and music experience (with the cost savings associated with such vertical integration), they cover the entire music industry. There was an opportunity for a player like SFX to come in a provide a similar one-stop shop focused exclusively on EDM. SFX is doing an industry roll-up within EDM (although it likes to call it EDC because that suggests something wider than music). SFX buys up music, DJs, clubs, festivals, etc. As its footprint gets bigger, SFX becomes more attractive for new EDM talent. These up-and-coming DJs can be signed by SFX and promoted through the company's clubs/festivals and other more established artists. There are ample opportunities for SFX to further expand its vertical integration: ticketing, talent management, merchandise, and, perhaps most interesting, sponsorship. When SFX acquires these smaller clubs/festivals, typically they're acquiring them from mom-and-pop owners. A professional, large-scale operator such as SFX can find significant cost savings. SFX just acquired a majority stake in the Rock In Rio festival, which hints that it might even expand beyond EDM in the future.

Top 10 Gold Stocks To Invest In Right Now

The bottom line is that Bob Sillerman and the rest of his team -- all his old compadres from past ventures -- know how to make a lot of money. What does a 65-year-old who beat throat cancer a decade ago know about EDM? An awful lot, it turns out. Sometimes experience matters. With a continued roll-up of mom-and-pop festivals and clubs and a new push into sponsorship, SFX looks very capable of hitting $20 next year.

Top 10 Financial Stocks To Buy For 2014

David Goldman/AP WASHINGTON -- The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell sharply last week and a gauge of factory activity hit an eight-month high in early November, hinting at some strength in the economy. Other data Thursday showed wholesale prices fell for a second straight month in October, the latest sign of a lack of inflation pressure which helps give the Federal Reserve leeway as it considers when to scale back its bond-buying stimulus. "Claims and manufacturing activity remain supportive for continued moderate economic growth in the fourth quarter," said Sam Bullard, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Securities (WFC) in Charlotte, N.C. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 21,000 to a seasonally adjusted 323,000, the Labor Department said. Economists had forecast a drop to just 335,000, and some cautioned that a public holiday last Monday could have contributed to some of the large decline. The department, however, said there were no special factors influencing the data, which covered the survey period for the government's report on employment in November. A four-week moving average meant to iron out week-to-week volatility fell 6,750 to 338,500. "There is no evidence of a pickup in layoffs and the latest report on claims should be seen as a neutral to slightly positive reading on payroll growth," said John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics in New York. Factory Activity Up, Inflation Muted Separately, a survey of factory purchasing managers showed activity picking up. Financial data firm Markit said its preliminary U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index rose to an eight-month high of 54.3 from 51.8 in October. Respondents linked the rebound from a one-year low touched last month partly to the end of a partial government shutdown and a rise in demand from domestic and overseas customers. But the optimism over manufacturing was tempered somewhat by a regional factory survey showing a sharp slowdown in activity in the mid-Atlantic region in November. Some economists said this was likely a delayed reaction to last month's 16-day government shutdown. "The manufacturing data suggests there is still some momentum," said Jacob Oubina, senior U.S. economist at RBC Capital Markets in New York. "I think what you still need to see now is follow-through into job gains." The data helped lift stocks on Wall Street, while the dollar climbed to a 4½ month high against the yen and U.S. Treasury debt prices rose. The jobless claims and Markit factory data added to recent reports on nonfarm payrolls and retail sales that have suggested the economy is gaining momentum. Despite the improving growth picture, inflation remains virtually absent. The Labor Department said its producer price index slipped 0.2 percent last month as gasoline prices tumbled, the largest decline since April. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, producer prices rose 0.2 percent, boosted by the introduction of new motor vehicle models. Excluding cars and trucks, the core PPI was up only 0.1 percent. During the last 12 months, overall producer prices have risen just 0.3 percent, with core prices up 1.4 percent. The data follows a report on Wednesday that showed consumer price inflation easing to a four-year low of 1 percent. "With Europe still in a funk, and China struggling with recovery from a slowdown, there is no spark to get inflation rolling anytime soon," said Michael Montgomery, a U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight in Lexington, Mass.

Verizon Shares Set to Rise on Upbeat Earnings

Top Heal Care Companies To Invest In Right Now

Earns Verizon (In this Sunday, April 7, 2013, photo, a Verizon Studio booth is seen at MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford, N.J.Mel Evans/AP NEW YORK -- Verizon Communications on Thursday posted stronger- than-expected third-quarter earnings and revenue on strong wireless growth, sending its shares up 2.4 percent in early trade. While the company's wireless customer growth numbers were slightly below Wall Street estimates, its Verizon Wireless venture with Vodafone Group (VOD) posted good profit and revenue growth as customers spent more on their services. "The numbers were fine but it wasn't a blowout quarter. It was a good third quarter," said Hudson Square analyst Todd Rethemeier. Verizon Wireless added 927,000 net retail subscribers in the quarter, compared with Wall Street expectations of about 1 million customers, according to eight analysts, with estimates ranging from 900,000 to 1.2 million. Verizon has agreed to buy out Vodafone's 45 percent share of the mobile venture. Verizon (VZ) said it expects wireless customer growth to improve sequentially in the fourth quarter. Verizon reported a third-quarter profit of $2.2 billion, or 78 cents a share, compared with $1.59 billion, or 56 cents a share, a year ago. Excluding unusual items, Verizon earned 77 cents a share in the quarter, compared with Wall Street expectations of 74 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Revenue rose 4.4 to $30.28 billion from $29.01 billion. Wall Street expected $30.16 billion. Its wireless profit margin was 51.1 percent, based on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization as a percentage of service revenue, and above its target range of 49 percent to 50 percent for the full year. Rethemeier said the profit margin would likely come down in the fourth quarter due to steep holiday season costs, since the company kept its wireless margin target for the year despite the strong third-quarter number. A 7.2 percent increase in wireless revenue for the quarter was offset by a slower 4.3 percent rise in wireline revenue. Verizon shares rose 2.4 percent to $48.40 in premarket trading after closing at $47.25 in the regular New York Stock Exchange session.

10 Best Gold Stocks To Own For 2014

More proof of American craft beer's excellence came Thursday with Belgian beer firm Duvel Moortgat's acquisition of Kansas City, Mo.-based Boulevard Brewing Co.

The 12th-largest U.S. craft brewery, Boulevard joins Brewery Ommegang of Cooperstown, N.Y., as the second American company owned by the international beer conglomerate. Duvel Moortgat, which acquired Brewery Ommegang in 2003, itself was founded in 1871. Its Duvel Belgian golden ale was considered one of the world's classic beers by the late Michael Jackson, the English beer expert whose writings and TV appearances beginning in the Seventies helped drive interest in beer.

Boulevard founder John McDonald noted on the company web site that a Belgian beer he drank in Paris led to his eventual founding of the brewery. At the age of 60, McDonald had begun to think about the future of the company.

10 Best Gold Stocks To Own For 2014: Newmont Mining Corporation(Holding Company)

Newmont Mining Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the acquisition, exploration, and production of gold and copper properties. The company?s assets or operations are located in the United States, Australia, Peru, Indonesia, Ghana, Canada, New Zealand, and Mexico. As of December 31, 2009, it had proven and probable gold reserves of approximately 93.5 million equity ounces and an aggregate land position of approximately 27,500 square miles. The company was founded in 1916 and is headquartered in Greenwood Village, Colorado.

10 Best Gold Stocks To Own For 2014: Australian Dollar(AU)

AngloGold Ashanti Limited primarily engages in the exploration and production of gold. It also produces silver, uranium oxide, and sulfuric acid. The company conducts gold-mining operations in South Africa; continental Africa, including Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Namibia, and Tanzania; Australia; and the Americas, which include Argentina, Brazil, and the United States. It also has mining or exploration operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, and Colombia. As of December 31, 2010, the company had proved and probable gold reserves of 71.2 million ounces. The company has a strategic alliance with Thani Dubai Mining Limited to explore, develop, and operate mines across the Middle East and parts of North Africa. AngloGold Ashanti Limited, formerly known as Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited, was founded in 1944 and is headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

I think the answer to this is yes, but it's definitely going to need some help from gold spot prices, and it'll need to formulate solidly structured contracts with its labor force in Africa. Last year, AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU  ) was forced to come to a pay raise agreement with some 10,000 striking workers, after a strike that completely closed its TauTona and Mponeng mines for months. AngloGold understands that higher labor costs are never welcomed from a business perspective, but the alternative of mine closures is even worse.

  • [By Daniel Putnam]

First, and most important, earnings estimates are stabilizing. In the past sixty days, 2013 estimates for the major gold miners have begun to tick up. In most cases, the increase is very modest. For instance, Goldcorp‘s (GG) EPS estimates have climbed from $0.91 to $0.95, while Barrick Gold‘s (ABX) have inched up from $2.57 to $2.64. Newmont Mining (NEM), Anglogold Ashanti (AU), and Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI) have shown similar gains. This positive rate of change marks a significant departure from the steady stream of bad news investors have had to endure in recent years.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

One way Yamana has kept its competitive cost advantage is through extensive sales of base-metal byproducts like copper and zinc, as both it and fellow low-cost rival Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) benefit from utilizing those secondary metals to offset the cost of their gold production. Peers Gold Fields (NYSE: GFI  ) and AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU  ) , on the other hand, face much higher costs in part because of their exposure to South Africa and its unstable labor market.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

We've seen the flip side of that trend play out in recent years, as rock-bottom interest rates in the U.S. have encouraged investment in higher-yielding income investments in places like Australia, Brazil, and South Africa. Interest from foreign investors got to be so extensive in Brazil that the federal government imposed a tax on foreign investors in bonds in order to curb demand and slow the pace of the Brazilian real's appreciation. Exchange-rate issues also likely played a role in the health of the commodities markets, as mining giants BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP  ) and Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO  ) in Australia benefited from increased demand largely for base metals. Similarly, South African gold miners AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU  ) and Gold Fields (NYSE: GFI  ) outperformed rivals from elsewhere in the world, benefiting from strength in the South African rand currency.

10 Best Blue Chip Stocks To Own Right Now: NEW GOLD INC.(NGD)

The company also has development projects, including the New Afton gold, silver, and copper project in Canada; and a 30% interest in the El Morro copper-gold project in Chile. The company was formerly known as DRC Resources Corporation and changed its name to New Gold Inc. in June 2005. New Gold Inc. was founded in 1980 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Bridges favorite stocks include Goldcorp, Newmont, Eldorado Gold (EGO) and New Gold (NGD).

Note, however, that these recommendations are all qualified in one way or another. Investors should keep that in mind before going all in on the gold miners.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Even bad news has failed to dent the rise in gold stocks today. NewGold (NGD), for instance, has gained 1.8% to $7.49 despite the fact that the wall of one of its mines collapsed. The Wall Street Journal has the details:

10 Best Gold Stocks To Own For 2014: Claude Resources Inc.(CGR)

In august, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) published the mid-year review for the agricultural sector. Their findings point to a slowdown for the industry, highlighting a 9.5% decline on exports through the first half of 2013. Also, late soybean planting in the USA is expected to compound the industry slowdown. So, what are the prospects for AGCO (AGCO), CNH Global (CNH), and Deere & Co. (DE) under such conditions?

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By idahansen]

"China and US lift global economy" was the banner headline this weekend for the Financial Times. While obviously bullish for the global economy, it is particularly so for gold and silver stocks such as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX), Goldcorp (NYSE: GG), and Wishbone Gold PLC (PINK: WISHY). That was shown by the exchange traded fund for gold, SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD), and the exchange traded fund for silver iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV), both rising sharply for the week.

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

There is also a need for diversification in an investment portfolio that gold and silver holdings provide for a family office. It is a classic hedge against economic turmoil. Companies in the sector range from Goldcorp (NYSE: GG), the world's biggest, to Wishbone Gold, a small cap with promising holdings in Australia. If dividend income is desired by the family office, there is Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY), a favorite of financial columnist Jim Jubak, that has a 2.80 percent yield. Goldcorp has a dividend of around 2.50 percent, with Newmont Mining's (NYSE: NEM) even higher at nearly three percent.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Newmont has dropped 2.2% to $25.73 at 3:02 p.m. While that’s in-line with the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF’s (GDX) 2.2% fall to 23.03, it’s better than the most heavily traded gold-mining stocks. Shares of Barrick Gold (ABX), for instance, have dropped 3.6% to $17.20, Gold Corp (GG) is down 3.1% at $23.54 and Eldorado Gold (EGO) has declined 3.9% to $5.82.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, look to other markets for guidance. For instance, precious metals bounced off their recent lows, with gold prices climbing $23 per ounce. Key gold-miners are also up sharply, with Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) rising about 3% and Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) up 1.4%. As two of the largest companies in the industry, both Barrick and Goldcorp have the ability to make strategic moves designed to pick up lucrative assets at bargain-basement prices. As weaker junior miners have to consider extraordinary measures to stay afloat, look for Goldcorp and Barrick to take advantage of fire-sale conditions to take their pick of the litter.

Advisors' Opinion:

While many precious-metals companies have been in a slump of late, there is one that belongs perpetually in your portfolio: Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) . The company is not like other miners -- including Pan American Silver (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) and First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) -- in that it has a unique business plan that insulates it against many of the vagaries of the mining business. Moreover, because silver will always have a significant industrial demand component, even with the heightened volatility you see in the silver market, maintaining exposure to silver is appropriate.

  • [By Doug Ehrman]

It is no secret that precious metals companies have been taking a pounding for some time now. The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) and iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV  ) , the gold and silver ETFs, have been hard hit and operating companies like First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) and Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) have been hit even harder. Through all of these struggles, and in some cases because of them, one precious metals company continues to look attractive for the long term: Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) .

  • [By Doug Ehrman]

Despite the weakness seen in precious metals a few weeks ago, silver has been relatively stable ever since mid-April, with the iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV  ) trading in a dollar-wide range ever since. With the presidents of the Chicago and Philadelphia Federal Reserve banksreleasing conflicting statements, turmoil may be just around the corner. Miners like Pan American (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) and First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) are still facing operating challenges, while silver streaming darling Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) struggles as well.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Duprey]

    Clash of the titans
When bears are raging on the gold bullion market, it's not surprising to see gold stocks getting mauled as well. Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  ) was the biggest loser in the sector, losing a quarter of its market cap on no company-specific news, though a report last Friday indicated that a large number of hedge funds had recently dumped their positions in the mid-tier miner. Yet it wasn't all that much better among the majors, either, as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) fell almost 13% and Kinross Gold (NYSE: KGC  ) was down 14%.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  )
It's simple physics: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. When gold prices nosedived earlier this week, gold miners with historically higher operating costs took the brunt of the hit. For the most part, that meant that development-stage miners, and those operating in Africa, where labor and political costs make cost-effective mining a challenge, took it on the chin. Possibly no stock was hammered more than Golden Star Resources, a gold miner in Ghana, which lost about one-quarter of its value on Monday alone.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Higher One Holdings (NYSE: ONE  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

One under-$10 business services player that looks poised for a run higher is Higher One (ONE), which provides technology-based refund disbursement, payment processing and data analytics services to higher education institutions and students. It also provides banking services to campus communities. This stock has been hit hard by the bears so far in 2013, with shares down by 26%.

If you take a look at the chart for Higher One, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last three months, with shares plunging from its high of $11.93 to its recent low of $6.97 a share. During that downtrend, shares of ONE were consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of ONE have recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $7.05 to $6.97 a share. This stock has now started to rebound sharply off that double bottom and move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ONE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $7.85 a share and then once it clears its 50-day moving average at $8.11 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 196,360 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ONE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9 to its 200-day moving average of $9.77 a share. This stock could even tag $11 a share if that 200-day gets taken out with volume.

Traders can look to buy ONE off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $7.39 a share, or below $7 a share. One can also buy ONE off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

While TransCanada's (NYSE: TRP  ) Keystone XL pipeline has seen its share of controversy, the British Columbia government has formally opposed Enbridge's (NYSE: ENB  ) Northern Gateway pipeline from Kitmat to Edmonton. This 1,177-kilometer pipeline is expected to transport 525,000 barrels of oil per day.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Today, many newly discovered unconventional sources are very light, sweet, and easy to refine. Since our Gulf Coast refineries are still geared toward heavy, sour crudes, we will continue to import that grade to use in these facilities. In fact, one type of crude oil that is strikingly similar toVenezuelanand Mexican crudes is Canadian oil sands. Canadian oil sands are indesperateneed of refineries capable of treating this heavy mix, and Gulf of Mexico refineries are just the type of refinery these crudes need. This is the driving force for Canadian pipeline companies TransCanada (NYSE: TRP  ) and Enbridge (NYSE: ENB  ) expanding their takeaway capacity to the Gulf through the Keystone XL and the Trunkline conversion, respectively.

  • [By Aimee Duffy]

WhenTransCanada (NYSE: TRP  ) first announced its plan to construct the Keystone XL pipeline, I'm sure company executives never thought it would wind up as one of the most polarizing environmental symbols in recent memory. Therefore the situation is still very bullish for investors in physical gold and the gold ETFs (GLD, CEF, and PHYS). Investors interested in leveraging this situation into higher potential profits may also consider buying gold miners such as Randgold (GOLD), Goldcorp (GG), Yamana Gold (AUY), and any of the other gold miners. Finally, those willing to shoulder much larger risks may consider some of the exploration and micro-cap companies that offer significant profits at a high risk such as Chesapeake Gold (CHPGF.PK), Pretium Resources (PVG), Western Copper (WRN), or any other of the junior exploration companies. Though investors should keep in mind that gold mining companies and explorers do not always rise with a rising gold price - do your research before you invest in the miners.

If you recall, when I statistically assessed gold miners in January on the basis of valuation, production, and debt, Goldcorp and Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY  ) were the only true standouts. Both Yamana and Goldcorp benefit from the mining of byproduct metals in their mines that they can then sell to offset the cost of their operations. What gave Yamana the ultimate edge -- and led to my declaration of it being the best gold miner, statistically speaking -- was its growing production compared to Goldcorp's flat year-over-year production.

And this news now results in dividend-paying gold stocks, such as Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY), Gold Fields (NYSE: GFI) and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM) being attractive as both short-term and long-term investments.

Soy Bean Levels

Given the recent news (Friday 13th) out of Cargill's main Argentinean crushing plant in Rosario, relating to a shortage of soybeans resulting in the suspension of operations out of the South American plant until March 2014 coupled with continued pressure from western heat waves in the U.S, how will beans fair in the coming weeks?beans2 With resistance coming in at 14.10 my suggestion is, that if traders factor-in the recent news out of Argentina onto their positions for this week we could see a close above this level and thus sparking a bullish movement towards 15.00. With the September contract now gone off the board, focus is now on the November contract and a Brazilian planting season which should kick off within the coming days, however with continued dryness in key states such as Mato Grosso farmers will enter the new season with degree scepticism and a rush to plant new beans will be tested from a weather perspective as fears of a lower yields due to inconsistent rain periods are forecasted. The 10 Numbers You Absolutely Need to Know This Week

Here are some of the numbers that are shaping the world this week... and why they matter to you:

$42 billion in net income was reported by all U.S. banks in the second quarter of 2013. This is the second consecutive earnings record posted.

34% is the increase in profit margin Wal-Mart is thought to derive from keeping employee wages at an average of $8.81 per hour. This is, in effect, a tremendous taxpayer subsidy, as full-time employees are pushed toward public assistance to make up for the shortfall. The White House estimates that underpaid Wal-Mart employees cost the taxpayers $5,815 per employee per year of employment. The "Wal-Mart Syndrome" has produced a very real drag effect on the economy, as disposable income dries up on a massive scale.

7,000% represents the increase, over the last five years, in access to emails, phone calls, and Skype conversations reported internally by the U.K.'s biggest spy agency, the Government Communications Headquarters. The amount of material being analyzed and processed has increased by 3,000% over the same time. These revelations come from materials "stolen" by National Security Agency (NSA) leaker Edward Snowden. The GCHQ is thought to spy on Americans' private communications in order to allow the U.S. NSA to deny that they are spying on Americans. The GCHQ, the NSA, and intelligence services in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand freely share collected information with one another. With friends like these, our Bill Patalon wonders what bona fide could enemies do?

40% is, according to the Institute for Policy Studies, the percentage of America's highest-paid CEOs who eventually ended up being fired, paying fines, or accepting government bailout money. The Institute went on to say that executives for the largest companies made about 350 times as much pay as the average worker in 2012. That's an average of $7,000 per hour. On the other hand, as Money Morning tech specialist Michael Robinson has reported, there are plenty of CEOs who are conduits to investor profits.

$46,000 is the theoretical price of one ounce of gold if all U.S. debt were required to be backed by gold.

$7,931 is the theoretical price of one ounce of gold if merely the entire U.S. money supply were required to be backed by gold. But gold price jumps are far from only theoretical.

90 is the number of days that Chinese developer Broad Sustainable Buildings says it will need to complete the world's tallest building, to be called Sky City - a 2,750-foot, super-tall skyscraper using their patented pre-fab process. The cost is projected to come in at $628 million. In December 2012, Broad constructed a proof-of-concept 30-story hotel, completely furnished, in just 15 days, or 360 hours. In comparison, Dubai's 2,722 Burj Khalifa, the world's current tallest building, took about 2,200 days and $1.5 billion. Some say that China is building immense ghost cities in a failed bid to boost GDP. But the truth is that China is playing a very, very long game - and the China-shorters don't want you to know.

47 days remain until October 15, 2013, when the United States is forecast to hit its "debt ceiling" and will be forced to suspend debt service unless a bargain is struck. For most of the United States' existence, the debt ceiling vote was considered a mere formality, and not raising it was rarely, if ever, considered. In recent years, politicians have shown a great willingness to walk the country up to the brink of default for political gain. The possible impact of a United States default on payments is thought to be catastrophic to the global economy. Besides, the U.S. debt may be at a tipping point already.

3.5% is the proposed sales tax sought by the city of Denver, CO, on newly legal recreational marijuana. This is on top of an existing 25% excise tax on the drug. The proposed sales tax is being put to Denver voters on a citywide ballot in November. The modest tax, if approved, is expected to bring in an additional $3.4 million in revenue for Denver, which will go toward law enforcement and public health programs. Statewide, Colorado expects, conservatively, revenue hikes of around $650 million from legal, recreational marijuana. And there's upside for investors, too.

390,000 represents the total number of repossessed homes that were kept off the REO markets in 2012. Fanny Mae owns the largest chunk of that, or 114,000 homes. Just 39,000, 10% of the total number of homes in REO inventory, were listed for sale, with the remaining 90% of inventory withheld to keep home prices from crashing. But, consumer advocacy group America's Watchdog warned that if all REO properties were suddenly released to the markets, we would see bank failures and a 20% nosedive in home prices. This would contribute to a recession. On the other hand, a continued tight housing supply could prolong the housing slump. Money MorningCapital Wave Strategist Shah Gilani called the nature of the recovery into question just the other day. Here's how it went down.

180 is the number of minutes trading on the NASDAQ was frozen late last week. Officials say the outage was triggered by a "bug" in software that caused communications problems between the ARCA exchange and the NASDAQ system. The problem led to a processor overload and eventually halted all trade on the $4.5 trillion exchange. But there's more here than a simple bug. Shah Gilani explains why you shouldn't take their explanations at face value.

Mitsubishi UFJ (NYSE: MTU  ) also plunged in the Japanese financial sector's sell-off, with the firm's stock dropping 12.3% over the week. This firm faced more of a threat from Thursday's action, however: Japan's benchmark bond yield climbed to its highest level in more than a year, and Mitsubishi is the largest lender by assets in the country and holds more than 48 million yen in government bonds. Bond yields are still coming off of record lows, so Mitsubishi's hardly in a dangerous place. The firm's attempts to expand recently may also help boost revenue at a company that posted declining net income in its most recent quarter.

The one currency that is running against the weak dollar tide is the Japanese yen. The yen initially climbed on the Fed's no taper decision—rising to 97.75 on the news—but then fell all the way back to 99 yen to the dollar and finished yesterday at 99.42. (Remember that since the yen is quoted in yen to the dollar, a higher number is a sign of a weak yen and a smaller number means the yen is getting stronger.) The thinking seems to be that the recent Japanese trade deficit will push the Bank of Japan to further weaken the yen, in order to boost Japanese exports. I continue to think that the yen will finish 2013 at weaker levels than current trading, and that leads me to continue to hold positions in Japanese stocks such as Toyota Motor (TM) and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MTU). Both stocks are members of my Jubaks Picks portfolio.

  • [By Jim Jubak]

I think you can use shares of Japanese exporters-such as Toyota Motors (TM)-or Japanese financials-such as Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MTU)-as trading vehicles for this move. I mention both because they trade as very liquid ADRs in New York. If you trade in Tokyo, you should look at exporters more leveraged to the yen than Toyota-such as Hino Motors (JP:7205 in Tokyo) or Mazda Motor (JP:7261)-or real estate development companies with more yen sensitivity than more diversified financials-such as Sumitomo Realty and Development (JP:8830). Toyota and Mitsubishi UFJ are both members of my Jubak's Picks portfolio.

Few regional banking stocks in the U.S. today cost more than BB&T (NYSE: BBT  ) stock. Indeed, the stock's biggest distinguishing factor is probably its priciness. But is there a good reason for investors to pay up for BB&T stock?

Finally, regional bank First Horizon National (NYSE: FHN  ) , which has banking branches throughout Tennessee, added 4.2% just a day after paying shareholders a $0.05 quarterly dividend. Like Genuine Parts, there is no company specific news driving First Horizon higher, but the prospect for a higher net interest margin because of higher interest rates is certainly adding a boost to banks like First Horizon that rely on traditional loan and deposit growth. In fact, Citi has already made moves in this direction, picking up Best Buy's (NYSE: BBY  ) branded credit card business from Capital One (NYSE: COF  ) earlier this year. Granted, this move seems to contradict Citi's old strategy of lightening up on credit cards, as demonstrated when it unloaded a $1.6 billion credit card portfolio on General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) back in 2010. But that was then, this is now, and today, DTAs are the issue that needs fixing.
