Best Canadian Stocks For 2014

Below is the May 25th houghts from the Frontlinenewsletter, republished in full.

Notes from SIC 2014

I and many others are still trying to digest the massive amount of useful and original information that was offered at last week Strategic Investment Conference. In this week letter I want to recap some of what I learned but do so in a little different manner. I find it quite instructive to listen to and read what other people have to say about their takeaways from the conference. I have come across several very good summaries and reviews that I am going to excerpt rather liberally, along with sharing some of my own thoughts.

Nearly everyone noted that there was somewhat of a divide in the opinions as to whether things in the US and global economies are getting better or getting worse. Upon reflection, I think that John Nicola (my Canadian partner of the eponymous wealth management firm, who sent me his comments, which I will use freely below) had it right. If we all examine a glass that is filled up to the mid-level, some of us will describe it is half-full, and others will describe it as half-empty. And of course there is plenty of data to back up either the optimistic or the pessimistic position.

Top Mid Cap Companies To Watch In Right Now: Ventas Inc. (VTR)

Advisors' Opinion:

For current investors, I still think the recent 10% price reduction still represents a premium valuation - of mispriced risk - and I would consider a rotation into a more risk-aligned healthcare REIT like Healthcare Trust of America (HTA) yielding 4.82% or Ventas, Inc. (VTR) yielding 3.47%. (See my HTA article here and my VTR article here).

I like to talk about that now. Because this more than anything is the practical part of net-net investing that turns people off. In today world we are used to getting things at a set price with the click of a button. Not just our books at Amazon. But our shares of Microsoft (MSFT) and Wells Fargo (WFC) and all the other blue chip stocks.

So why does this matter? At least in the banking space, regional economic figures like these can make a big difference for the success or failure of lenders. It goes a long way, for instance, in explaining the problems at SunTrust Banks (NYSE: STI  ) , which is based in Georgia, Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) , which assumed Wachovia's heavy Florida presence, and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , which has a significant footprint in California that was added to via its purchase of Countrywide Financial.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Interestingly, though, this analysis doesn't mention an important factor: Increasingly over the past decade, major mortgage lenders haven't held onto their loans but rather have sold them on to government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae (NASDAQOTCBB: FNMA  ) and Freddie Mac (NASDAQOTCBB: FMCC  ) . During the housing boom, mortgage lenders Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) and Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) didn't perform as well as they did because they were securing particularly high margins on their mortgage loans. Rather, they collected transaction-based income by immediately reselling conforming loans to Fannie and Freddie, often retaining streams of income from risk-free mortgage-servicing rights without keeping any liability for potential loan default. Even now, Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) relies on strength in mortgage-related income, and decreases in refinancing activity pose a threat to income growth in future quarters -- although unlike many of its peers, Wells has actually retained a good portion of its loans on its own books.
