NEW YORK (MarketWatch) China efforts to weaken its currency could be bolstering U.S. Treasurys and weighing on a rally in the dollar against the euro.
The Asian nation currency actions, thought to be an effort to boost its slowing economy, have contributed to these unlikely trading patterns, market participants say. It the latest way in which China economy has become intertwined with the U.S., five years after an American real estate bust elicited finger-pointing at the role Chinese funds played in cheap U.S. mortgages.
The 10-year Treasury (10_YEAR) yield fell from over 3% at the start of the year to an 11-month low of 2.44% at the end of the May; it more recently traded at 2.60%. The push lower in yields came even amid signs that the U.S. labor market recovery is picking up. All things being equal, yields were primed to rise.

2013 Performance of Alerian MLP Index versus the S&P 500 Index
While the average MLP investor was probably happy with 2013’s performance, there was of course a wide variation of performance in the MLP world. Among the conventional midstream and upstream MLPs, performance ranged from American Midstream Partners (NYSE: AMID) — the best performing midstream MLP with a gain of 98.5 percent in 2013 — down to the upstream MLP EV Energy Partners (Nasdaq: EVEP), which lost 40 percent for the year.
2013 Performance of American Midstream Partners versus EV Energy Partners
- [By Imperiya]
Over the past few years, government bonds have produced almost zero income for investors. This has led to many people searching high and low for income opportunities. High-yield bonds (though recently falling out of favor) and dividend factories have benefited greatly from this search. MLPs fall into this category, as distribution yields have grown. One such MLP, EV Energy Partners (EVEP), is currently yielding over 8%, which is why it landed high on the list of stock screens. After careful analysis, it is easy to realize there is more to this company than a great yield can tell us.
